This introductory research design workshop is designed for individuals who have had limited exposure to academic research.  It will expose attendees to the major quantitative research design topics that they may encounter when conducting quantitative research projects. Specifically, this workshop will begin by setting the context for research by distinguishing, at a macro level, the various types of quantitative research. Next, the processes for conducting quantitative research will be explained.  This background information is needed in order to understand the various research design options that are available.  The workshop will continue by introducing important research design concepts as well as possible statistical threats to these research designs.  The majority of the workshop will be devoted to discussing various types of research designs and the benefits and challenges associated with implementing each design.  The workshop will conclude by  discussing the most common statistical procedures that can be used with these various research designs.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Distinguish among the various types of research
• Define reliability and validity and discuss why each concept is important to the research design process
• Discuss the various types of research designs
• Discuss the threats to the validity of these designs
• Identify and explain the types of statistical tests that are associated with the various research designs
