QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: SURVEY DESIGN & DATA ANALYSIS In-Person

This in-person workshop will introduce key aspects of qualitative research, including its different methods, strengths, and limitations. It’s designed for faculty interested in conducting research and those aiming to improve student services and college operations. Participants will learn how to design surveys that collect data to answer specific research questions. We’ll also discuss key features of surveys and effective ways to administer them.

The main focus will be on analyzing qualitative data, especially textual data (like responses to open-ended survey questions). We’ll look at various Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) and discuss the pros and cons of employing AI. We will take participants step-by-step through qualitative data analysis, with a focus on coding textual data. We’ll also go over basic Excel functions to help with data analysis, working through a sample dataset of open-ended survey responses. Then, participants will have time to analyze a different dataset on their own.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand different types of qualitative research methods and their purposes.
  • Create survey questions that match specific research goals.
  • Code textual data
  • Conduct a qualitative analysis of textual data using Excel
